| The objective of this paper is to study selected components of the nutrient cycle of pure and mixed stands of native forest species of Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. Tree diameter, height, above-ground biomass, and nutrient content were determined in 22-year-old stands. Litterfall, litter decomposition, and nutrient concentration were evaluated from August 1994 to July 1995. The following species were studied: Peltogyne angustiflora, Centrolobium robustum, Arapatiella psilophylla, Sclerolobium chrysophyllum, Cordia trichotoma, Macrolobium latifolium. The litter of a natural forest and a 40-year-old naturally regenerated second-growth forest was sampled as well. | Stydy at a laboratory to investigate the effects of litter from different species (Theobroma grandiflorum - cupuacu, Bactris gasipaes - pupunha, Bertholletia excelsa - castanha-do-Para, Bixa orellana - urucum, Pueraria phaseoloides - pueraria) and fertilization with N and P on C, N and P in microbial biomass of the topsoil (0cm-5cm) with high organic C contents and of an underlying horizon (10cm-15cm) with low organic C contents of a Xanthic Ferrasols, in Manaus-AM (Brasil). |

| Estudo sobre a fauna do solo e decomposicao da serapinheira feito em tres diferentes ecossistemas na Amazonia central: (1) floresta primaria (FLO), (2) floresta secundaria (SEC), e (3) duas parcelas de cultivo misto (POA, POC). As pesquisas incluiram a avaliacao da producao e estoque de serapilheira, parametros do solo, fatores microclimaticos, abundancia e biomassa da fauna do solo, determinacao da respiracao no solo e biomassa microbiana, medidas das taxas de respiracao dos componenetes da fauna, e analises de micronutrientes. Apesar das diferencas observadas entre as areas de estudo, foi observado que em todas elas o sistema de decomposicao da serapilheira foi controlado pela macrofauna, e que, em todos os sistemas de cultivo estudados, as condicoes... |
